After reworking one of my beds this fall, I decided to plant pansies for winter color. It’s really not a complicated process, but a good opportunity to try out a video format.
We are fortunate to live in a mild climate where pansies are able to bloom from October to May for winter color. I’ll be planting a mixed color bed of red, yellow and blue pansies. known as McCaw.
The process is simple and creates an attractive bed in a short time.
Pansies are a hardy plant, and you can get away with simply planting the flowers in your flower beds, or in containers on your porch or patio. but for a better show and healthier plants, I encourage you to use Blood meal or a slow release fertilizer when planting your pansies. (if you choose to use blood meal, add a little in each hole when you plant so the roots can grow into the fertilizer more quickly.)
You may notice in this video clip a unique watering technique that I don’t recommend you try at home. It’s really difficult to water from a 90 degree angle. When filming from a smart phone, it is easy to turn the camera without really realizing it. I hope this video was helpful. If you have any questions feel free to email me, and be sure to have fun playing in the dirt.
